THE MOST HOLY BODY & BLOOD OF CHRIST

A Catechism on the Eucharist

Homily 2026:

In the Gospel Jn 6:50-58 (Jesus says over 7 times that His flesh is food and drink.)

John 6:51 “The bread that I give for the life of the world is my flesh.”

John 6:54 “Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life.”

John 6:55 “For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.”

At the Last Supper in Matthew’s Gospel Ch 26:26-28 we read:

“While they were eating Jesus took a loaf of bread and after blessing it, He broke it, and gave it to His disciples and said ‘Take, eat, this is my body.’  He then took a cup and after giving thanks He gave it to them saying: ‘Drink of it, all of you because this is my blood.’”

When Jesus said: “This is My Body and “This is My Blood,” we know that the Apostles knew that He meant that literally because the early Church Fathers, some who were disciples of the Apostles, held that belief very strongly.

St Ignatius of Antioch for example, was a disciple of St John the Apostle.  St Ignatius wrote: “The bread we eat and the wine we drink, is the selfsame body of Our Saviour Jesus Christ.”

The first time in history where there appears to be some doubt about the belief of the real presence occurred in year 700.

It was in Lanciano, Italy.  A priest did believe in the Real Presence, but he did have doubt.  He was asking himself: “could this be really true, that mere bread and wine changes into Jesus?  After all it is a huge claim to make.  As this priest was offering Mass at the consecration when a priest repeats the words Jesus prayed at the Last Supper, the bread changed into human flesh and the wine changed into human blood.

In 1972 Pope Paul VI gave permission for scientists to touch and examine the Host.  All concluded that the flesh is tissue of the main valve of a human heart and the heart is still alive.

In 1992 the same miracle occurred in Buenos Aires, Argentina.  Among the scientists who examined the Host was a world expert in forensic medicine.  He discovered that the Host was flesh of the main valve of a human heart, and the heart was still alive and also that the person had died of ‘extreme torture.’

Then the Host of Lanciano was compared to the Host of Buenos Aires.  The finding was that they both belong to the heart of the same person.

There have been some people who have lived on the Eucharist:

Teresa Neuman from Germany, died in 1961.  The last 42 years:

Marte Robin, France, 1981, 50 years.

Luisa Piccarreta, Italy, 1947, 64 years.

My personal devotion for the Blessed Sacrament began in my early twenties.  At that age I started attending Mass every day.  In my prayer time I would pray before the Tabernacle.  When I left Jesus in the Tabernacle, I always felt strengthened – with more life.

I received more Grace praying before Jesus in the Tabernacle than I did when praying before a statue of Our Mother.  In my late 20’s I felt a call to the priesthood.  I envisioned or imagined that as a priest I would have a lot of Eucharistic Adoration in my parish.  I wanted everyone to experience what I was experiencing.

In 1992 I heard of three men from Perth who had joined a Religious Order called Missionaries of the Blessed Sacrament.  The Order was based in the Philippines.  From 1993 to 1997 I entered a seminary in the Philippines.  In 1997 Archbishop Hickey invited me to return to Perth.  My Superior of the Missionaries of the Blessed Sacrament agreed.  In the year 2000 I was ordained here as a diocesan priest with the charism to promote Perpetual Eucharistic adoration.  Here in Perth, we have 5 parishes with PEA.  I helped start one in Melbourne, one in Tasmania and five in NSW.  I have been to Indonesia 5 times with another priest; we have established about 10 places with PEA.  Today in Indonesia there are about 60 centres with PEA.

Why Food?  By becoming Food, Jesus is able to give Himself to us, all He is and all that He has in the deepest possible union/communion.  Hence the term “Holy Communion”.

John 6:56: “He who eats My Flesh and drinks My Blood lives in Me and I live in Him.”

We became One in Christ, as much as a human can.

The ideal is Our Blessed Mother, who the Bible says is “full of Grace” or “full of God.”

Through the Eucharist, Gill will accomplish His plan which is to restore His Kingdom here on earth, where all people will be in communion with Him.

Therefore, God’s plan is that we receive Him in Holy Communion often, every day, if convenient and spend time with Him in Eucharistic Adoration, also every day, if convenient.
